Whisky's boom in Poland
Poles buy more and more whisky. Demand for both the American as well as the Scotch whisky is growing. According to Nielsen, in 2009, the value of the Polish whisky market amounted to 540 million zlotys. Yet, in the first quarter of 2010, the sale of whisky (by quantity) was by 26% higher than in the last year. Whisky belongs to the few spirits that haven’t felt the results of the crisis.

Bankruptcy of Polmos Szczecin
The owner of the brand Starka, in debt for 40 million zlotys, hasn’t been able to conduct the intended bankruptcy in arrangement with creditors. The District Court in Szczecin has issued a decision on liquidation bankruptcy of Szczecińska Wytwórnia Wódek „Polmos” S.A. Polmos couldn’t reach an agreement with Customs Chamber, one of the main creditors of the company. The company’s management is not going to appeal against the court’s decision.The plant’s bankruptcy stirs up controversies and interest among the local politicians.

More pubs with Warka logo
Żywiec Group, the owner of the Warka brand, wants to increase the number of pubs operating with the sign of its banner brand. By the end of 2010, there will be around 100 Warka pubs in Poland. Development of the pub franchising network is to promote the Warka brand.

The Government shall support producers of the Polish hopper
Hopper producers, who in 2008 and 2009 lost their incomes as a result of the hops sale market breakdown, are granted a single support in the amount of 14 thousand zlotys per hectare of hopper cultivation. Agricultural Restructuring and Modernisation Agency (ARiMR) accepts applications from the planters until the 31st of July this year. The poviat branches shall issue the decisions.

Ambra Group purchased El Sol
Carlsberg Polska has sold the brand of the El Sol wines in favour of Ambra. After purchasing the rights of the brand, the Ambra Group has taken over distribution of these wines. Selection of wines from Spain, Italy and the New World is offered under the brand of El Sol.

Vodka price rise plans in Russia
According to the last propositions of the Russian Minister of Finance, the vodka price should rise until 2013 up to 200 roubles. The Ministry proposes gradual increases varying between 20 and 30 roubles annually. Presently a half litre of pure vodka costs 89 roubles. The bill of the financial department makes up a part of the governmental campaign involving a fight with alcoholism in Russia. It is also to increase the budget income from the excise tax.

Poland, the largest importer of the Moldavian wine
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Poland is the largest customer of the Moldavian wine in the European Union with perspective of further co-operation development. In 2009, Poland imported over 5 million tonnes of the wine of a value of nearly 6.7 million Euros. The domestic market consumes 45% of the Moldavian alcoholic beverage assigned for export to the European Commonwealth states. Incomes from the wine sale make up 50% of the budget incomes of Moldavia.

Polish women drink light wine
49% of women, subjected to the poll conducted by a research company MilwardBrown SMG/KRC, purchases light wines, 43% of the respondents reaches for refreshing wines, 45.5% seeks wines suitable for any occasion. The poll was conducted in April 2010 on a countrywide group of 324 respondents in the age of 18 - 60 and consuming wine at least once in six months. The summer season contributes to the growing popularity of light refreshing wines.

Tesco in Great Britain wants minimum prices of alcoholic beverages
The British chain of supermarkets supports the governmental alcohol sale ban below specific price limit. Tesco in the islands demands determining minimum prices for different alcoholic beverages from the British government. According to the owners of Tesco, the extreme price competition in Great Britain has led to a considerable purchase cost reduction of alcoholic beverages (mainly beer and vodka) and at the same time contributed to the national drinking problem.
